What Is A.S.I.S.T.
A.S.I.S.T. stands for Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training; it is an evidence-based, interactive workshop designed to help participants recognize when someone may be having thoughts of suicide and respond effectively (LivingWorks, 2023). Using role-play, discussion, and practical skills-building, A.S.I.S.T. teaches how to listen without judgment, provide emotional support, and create a safety plan that connects the person in crisis with professional and community resources (Gould et al., 2021).
The Zero Suicide Partners of Pinellas have certified A.S.I.S.T. trainers on staff, ensuring this life-saving instruction is available locally at no charge. By offering in-person training within the community, ZSPoP makes it easier for residents, professionals, and volunteers to gain the skills needed to help keep others safe from suicide. This approach empowers everyday people to turn moments of risk into opportunities for safety and hope (LivingWorks, 2023).
